NFL Draft
April 25th, 2008
This weekend is the two day NFL draft in New York where entirely too much will ba made of the first 10 selections and then teams will get down to business and build their rosters throughout the rest of the day and the next day. This year the Dolphins have already signed offensive lineman Jake Long from Michigan and signed him to a contract. Presumably Glenn Dorsey is going second to the Rams, but who knows. The important picks are made later in the day and on the second day. Teams are built and sustained with talent from later rounds and maybe some surprise picks at the end of day two.
Anyone know of any NFL studies showing where players were chosen in the draft and how they ended up as players? I'm betting there are alot of high round choices that simply don't pan out. I personally kind of like the method used by Ted Thompson (Packer GM) which is to trade down and acquire more picks with more options for players. I think first round choices are overrated...of course there are franchise players available there, but then again Montana was a 3rd round pick, Favre a second, and Tom Brady a 6th.
