Rockets Hold off Lakers despite Kobe’s 45 Point Effort
Final Score: Rockets 95 – Lakers 93
Kobe Bryant scored 45 points, 18 in the fourth, in the season opener against the Houston Rockets. But it wasn’t enough to beat the Rockets. Tracy McGrady poured 30 points and Yao Ming had 25 points and 12 boards for the Rockets.
Derek Fisher and Kobe made a 13-0 run late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 92 with 13 seconds left on the game clock. Shane Battier responded by making a tie-breaking 3 pointer then fouled Kobe on the next play before he could make a shot. The Rockets were up by three points with 1.3 seconds left. Kobe made his first free-throw and intentionally missed the second one for quick two points. He grabbed the rebound but the ball was ball was knocked out of his hands as the game concluded.
Spurs Too Good For the Trail Blazers
Final Score: Spurs 106 – Trailblazers 97
The talent, experience and maturity of San Antonio Spurs were too much for Portland Trailblazers to handle. Tim Duncan had 24 points and 13 rebounds for the San Antonio Spurs. Teammates Manu Ginobili and Finals MVP Tony Parker combined for 35 points as they rolled past Trail Blazers. Lamarcus Aldridge led the Oden-less Trail Blazers with 27 points. Martell Webster added 21 points while big man Joel Przybilla contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Trailblazers.
The NBA championship rings were awarded to the San Antonio Spurs before the game started. The championship rings – made of gold and encrusted with diamonds were given to the coaches and players before the unveiling of the new NBA Championship banner in AT&T Center.
Jazz Victorious Against Warriors in Season Opener
Final Score: Jazz 117 – Warriors 96
Carlos Boozer scored 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Deron Williams added 24 points and 8 assists for Utah Jazz in their opening game against the Golden State Warriors. Baron Davis poured in 25 points and 10 assist while teammates Monta Ellis and Mickael Peitrus added 17 points apiece. The two teams met months ago during the previous season’s playoffs. The disciplined Jazz eliminated the scrappy Warriors in five games in the second round of the playoffs.
The Warriors played without their tough guy Stephen Jackson after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge. Jazz used their size advantage against the Warriors and out rebounded Warriors 56-37. Boozer seemed unstoppable as he scored relentlessly inside the paint throughout the game.
