Casa de Campo is the largest public park in Madrid (1,722 ha), placed at western borders of the city. Since the 16th century, it was Royal property, used as a game preserve for the Kings and royalty; until 1931, when it was declared a public park. Since then, it has been open to public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are several facilities inside: the theme park, the zoo, the cable car (that goes from Casa de Campo to Parque del Oeste), part of IFEMA, the sports pavilion Madrid Arena and different public sport facilities.

One of the most popular places in the huge Casa de Campo is the Lake, easily reachable by the Metro (Station: Lago). It has a quay where you can hire a rowing boat in spring and summer. However, all year round, there’s a canoeing school, opened in 1991. Because of this, the Lake is usually full of canoers learning or maybe training for their next competition.
